Material sample

The Residential Health Guidelines provide detailed instructions for taking material samples. Research laboratories provide information on the sampling process and how to submit samples to the laboratory.

Material samples are used to identify moisture damage in materials and specify the extent of the repair area.

Material samples are taken from building materials that have been damaged by mold or are suspected to be damaged by mold. Multiple samples can be taken from the same damage area to determine the extent of the damage. The sampling location should be representative of the structure or damage being investigated.

At least 1 gram of material is required for microbiological analysis. The sample is taken with clean tools and placed in a clean, airtight plastic bag. Sampling should progress from a clean area to the most damaged material, following the presumed path of contamination.
